Syrian Refugees: The Looming Winter Months in Jordon

The looming winter months remind Syrian refugees in Jordan of yet another struggle. With the majority of them living below the poverty line, large-scale winterization efforts by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and its partners in Jordan are becoming more critical.

Hilal, his wife and six children live in this poorly insulated house in the northern city of Al Mafraq.

With cracked windows and no doors, their house can be bitterly cold in the winter, but it’s all they can afford. Hilal and his wife use blankets and carpets to cover the windows and doors. They do what they can to keep the family warm within their means.

Suffering from spinal and back problems, Hilal’s only lifeline is the cash assistance he receives from UNHCR. The money helps him buy heating and winter clothes for his children.

The family’s main concern is their 11-year-old daughter Milyar, who suffers from asthma and for whom the winter months pose a serious risk of infection.”

Hilal used UNHCR’s monthly cash to install a proper window in her room

UNHCR said of the total 180 million USD requested for this year’s regional winter response, it still needed 32 million USD to help millions of displaced Syrian, Iraqi and other families~UNHCR
