A Japanese high school student who couldn’t take his uncle’s snoring was jailed for trying to kill him by poisoning his miso soup.

According to Japanese authorities, an 18-year-old high school student from Ichihara, in the Chiba Prefecture, has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to poison his uncle’s miso soup in order to kill him.Investigators said, the teenager decided to take extreme measures after growing irritated with his uncle’s loud snoring.

Toxic oleander leaves were chopped up by the teenager and surreptitiously added to his uncle’s food, according to the police. Oleandrin, a hazardous toxin found in oleander, can be lethal if consumed, the Japanese newspaper The Mainichi reports.

The incident happened at the family home on July 17 during at around 12.15 to 12.25 pm. The 53-year-old uncle, who was a self employed and the teenager and his mother lived with him, spat out the soup after finding an odd taste.

He soon experienced uncomfortable symptoms, such as stomach ache and numbness in his mouth. He went to the doctor and received poisoning treatment. Subsequent testing revealed that his soup had a deadly concentration of oleandrin.

When interrogated the teenager allegedly told police that he “couldn’t stand” his uncle’s incessant snoring and that’s why he poisoned the soup. He was then charged with attempted murder by the police.
