A tiny Mexican monkey at the Guadalajara Zoo has become Mexico’s newest online sensation after being rejected by his mother and is clutching to a stuffed dog for comfort.
Yuji was born on March 3 weighing barely 443 grams, or just under a pound. At the Guadalajara Zoo’s Integral Center of Animal Medicine and Wellbeing (CIMBA), Yuji, a six-week-old patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas), is being hand-raised after his mother, Kamaria, a first-time parent, neglected to properly cuddle or nurse him in the early hours after his birth, Mexican News daily Reports.
Yuju is receiving round-the-clock care from a group of over a dozen vets and biologists, including four bottles of enriched formula each day. Yuju currently weights 23.7 ounces, or 673 grams.
Yuji’s routine is the same: he naps and drinks from a bottle while clinging to the plush toy inside a box with a small hammock and ropes to promote climbing. Zoo staff swap the stuffed dog with a bear and a monkey to keep the toys clean.
