UN Security Council New Members

The President of the Security Council for the month of January, Ambassador José Singer Weisinger of the Dominican Republic, briefed correspondents on the programme of work.

Responding to questions, he commented on the availability of the Council to engage on Venezuela.

Weisinger said that “undoubtedly if they call upon us again, we would be ready” as the Dominican Republic “has been a centre of dialogue for Latin American conflicts in the past.”

UN Security Council New Members

Turning to the possibility of a meeting with Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine when the Council meets on the Middle East later this month, he said “I would be delighted. If on the 15th he is here and the meeting is being held.”

The Dominican Republic is Security Council president this month. It is one of five new members beginning their two-year Council terms on 1 January, with Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, and South Africa~UNIFEED
