Ukraine’s Escalating Hostilities Pose an Immediate Threat to Children: UNICEF

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell expressed serious concern that the intensification of hostilities in Ukraine poses an imminent threat to the lives and well-being of Ukraine’s 7.5 million children.

Russell stated in a statement that heavy weapons fire along the line of contact has recently damaged vital water infrastructure and educational facilities. She went on to say that until the conflict stops, tens of thousands of families will be forced to flee their homes, resulting in a huge increase in humanitarian needs.

UNICEF is expanding life-saving programmes for children across eastern Ukraine, according to Russell. Trucking safe water to conflict-affected areas, prepositioning health, hygiene, and emergency education supplies as close as possible to communities near the line of contact, and collaborating with municipalities to ensure that children and families in need receive immediate assistance are just a few examples. Children who have been affected by the persistent insecurity are receiving psychosocial support from UNICEF-supported mobile teams.
