The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park is located in South India’s Tamil Nadu districts of Ramanathpuram and Tuticorin. The main attractions are the marine wildlife and coral reefs. The park is made up of 21 islands that are surrounded by coral reefs and shallow water habitats with unique marine species.
This is India’s first marine biosphere reserve. It was founded in 1980. The park covers a total area of 6.23 km.The park’s flora includes mangroves and a wide variety of seaweeds and sea grasses, while the wildlife includes such unusual creatures as dugong, green turtles, and Olive Ridley turtles. Visitors are captivated by bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, finless porpoises, parrotfish, butterfly fish, clown fish, and a variety of attractive corals.
The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park was established in 1980. The park was renamed a Biosphere Reserve in 1989 to protect the region’s diverse and endangered marine life.
In this marine habitat, there are about 12 species of sea grass and 147 species of sea weed.The park is also known to attract migrating species such as red knots, crab plovers, and bar-tailed godwits, as well as flamingos.
