Smishing is a cyberattack that uses text messages or SMS (Short Message Service) to target users.
Cybercriminals use smishing attacks to trick victims into divulging financial or personal information, clicking on malicious links, or downloading Mali software or apps.
Users could be tricked by the smishing URL link into installing malicious software, or malware, which then installs itself on users phone. In order to make it simpler to steal users information, attackers often create customised websites that imitate geniune ones.
According to experts, smishing is a type of social engineering in which cybercriminals exploit feelings of fear, compassion, curiosity, or greed to persuade people to provide vital informations. They achieve this by sending fake messages to users mobile device under the guise of a reliable source.
Smishing attacks are primarily used to steal people’s identities by deceiving them into disclosing personal information, to gain unauthorized access to victims’ financial information, and to infect victims’ devices with malware when clicked, allowing hackers to take control of the compromised devices, access personal data, and use it for their financial gains.
Use two-factor authentication, install antivirus software, avoid clicking on dubious links or files, and refrain from texting personal information like passwords, credit card numbers, addresses, or emails in order to prevent potential smishing scams.
