Portugal Government to Take Active Role to Mobilize International Community to Stop Human Rights Violations in Mozambique

Portugal Parliament approves PAN recommendation to mobilize the international community to stop crimes against humanity in Mozambique.

The draft resolution to place the humanitarian crisis and the problem of terrorism experienced in Mozambique in the priorities of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union was recently approved in the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic.

The proposal expects the Portuguese Government to take an active role in the intervention and mobilization of the international community to end these attacks on human rights and life.

“In the month that we celebrate International Human Rights Day, we could not fail to bring here, in this case, and in this context, as is the case of the dramatic situation that the population of Cabo Delgado lives in Mozambique. We believe that Portugal is important in awareness for humanitarian intervention in this situation, not only because of the humanitarian values and moral duty that guides us in this matter, but above all because of the close relationship that exists between Portugal and Mozambique. Both part of the Portuguese-speaking countries.

The situation in Mozambique is extremely serious as reported by the international press and non-governmental organizations, in addition to the population terrified daily by murders carried out with extreme cruelty and the disappearance of a high number of children abducted by terrorist groups and whose denunciations even tell us that they are subject to rapes and forced marriages.

The international administration also estimates that three hundred and fifty thousand people are now at risk of starving in that country. We cannot spend more time to intervene and mobilize the international community for this scourge that has already made half a million refugees. The international community and Portugal should not take long to act, nor would it be justifiable before the populations, that we did not send a clear signal of support and solidarity with all those affected and in the effective implementation of actions that aim to achieve this objective. We also cannot fail in the absolute condemnation of all the acts of murder, torture and violence that have happened in that country and in the total repudiation of organizations that prey on human beings, the most fragile and unprotected in the most vulnerable areas of the world “, said Inês de Sousa Real who is a lawyer, deputy and president of the People-Animals-Nature parliamentary group in the Assembly of the Republic since 2019.

The vote was clear in this regard with the Socialist Party (PS), Social Democratic Party (PSD), Left Bloc (BE), CDS-Popular Party, Party of Animal People and Nature (PAN), Chega (CH), Liberal Initiative, Cristina Rodrigues (Ninsc), Joacine Katar Moreira (Ninsc) to agree with the recommendation and with the Abstention of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and Green Party (PEV).The PAN considers it a “scourge that, so far, which has already made half a million refugees! It is unthinkable to remain inert in the face of these organizations that murder and torture the most fragile and unprotected human beings in the most vulnerable areas of the world! Against this backdrop of pure horror, we were perplexed by the abstention of the PCP and the PEV! And they still accuse PAN of not worrying about people “.
