Often referred to as a romance scam, the pig butchering scam is a persistent deception that blends bitcoin fraud, romance scams, and investment schemes. The name of this fraud, which has its origins in Southeast Asia, comes from the Chinese phrase ‘Shāz Hū Pán,’ which means butchering pigs. Scammers that use cryptocurrencies look for victims on social media and dating websites.

A scammer, often known as the “host,” contacts a victim online by sending a ‘wrong number’ text message, using social media, or using a dating app. Hosts maintain continuous communication to establish a rapport after identifying a suitable target, the figurative ‘pig.’ The host urges the victim to begin cryptocurrency trading after gaining their trust. The host will say that huge returns are normal and that they have family ties or intimate knowledge in the investment business.

They urge the victim to use an app or fake investing platform that appears to be legitimate. They might even offer to trade together in order to demonstrate how simple it is to generate profits. The fraudster makes it appear as though they are making money by simulating trades after the victim joins the platform. The scam artist keeps coercing the victim into making ever-bigger investments.

There has been noticeable rise in pig-butchering scams in India, which are targeted at investors and spread via fake trading apps. This fraudulent scam involves the distribution of phishing sites and counterfeit trading software through the Google Play Store and App Store.
