Patan a UNESCO World Heritage Site in India

Interior of Rani-ki-Vav

Patan is a treasure trove of architectural gems and ancient temples with a history dating back to the mediaeval period. It is home to Rani Ka Vav, the latest Indian entrant to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This location, located in Gujarat, is on the banks of the ancient Saraswati river’s remnants.

According to UNESCO, in the 11th century AD, Rani-ki-Vav Rani-ki-Vav was built on the banks of the Saraswati River as a memorial to a ruler. On the Indian subcontinent, stepwells are a unique type of subsurface water resource and storage system that have been in use since the third millennium BC. They progressed from a simple pit in sand to complex multi-story works of art and architecture over time. Rani-ki-Vav was constructed at the pinnacle of artisans’ ability in stepwell construction and the Maru-Gurjara architectural style, demonstrating mastery of this complex method as well as tremendous beauty in detail and proportions. It is divided into seven levels of stairs with sculptural panels of high artistic quality; more than 500 main sculptures and over a thousand minor sculptures combine religious, mythological, and secular imagery, often referencing literary works, and are designed as an inverted temple highlighting the sanctity of water. The fourth level is the deepest, leading to a 23-meter-deep rectangular tank measuring 9.5 m by 9.4 m. The well, which is located at the property’s westernmost extremity, has a diameter of 10 metres and a depth of 30 metres.

Patan City Museum is a museum in Patan, is located near Rani ki Vav. It is one of Gujarat’s most recognised museums and one of Patan’s must-see tourist attractions, located near Patan Patola Heritage. The museum mostly displays sculptures made of marble and sandstone that date from Gujarat’s ancient and mediaeval periods. Some of the statues depict Hindu gods as well as former kings of Gujrat.

Sahastralinga Talav is an artificial water storage tank built in the late eleventh century by Chalukyan ruler Sidharaj Jai Singh in the northwestern part of Patan. A conduit from the river Sarasvati supplies water to the tank.

Patan is known for its stunning hand-woven Patola sarees, and it is considered that Patan is the home of Patola artists.Sarees, jewellery, handicrafts, readymade clothing, and other gift shops thrive in Patan for tourists.
