New Assassination of Journalist in Haiti

The journalist Nehemiah Joseph was murdered on Thursday, October 10, 2019 in the city of Mirebalais (center of the country). This is the second journalist killed this year in Haiti. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is extremely concerned by the intensification of attacks on the press in this country and calls on the authorities to strengthen the protection of journalists throughout the country.

This Thursday, October 10, 2019, the journalist Nehemiah Joseph was murdered near Bayas Park, in the municipality of Mirebalais (center of the country). Armed individuals approached him and forced him to lodge in the trunk of his own vehicle, before reaching him mortally with three bullets.

Nehemiah Joseph was a journalist for Radio Panic FM in Mirebalais and a permanent correspondent in the center department for mega radio , based in Port-au-Prince. According to the first testimonies collected, he had recently reported on social networks and on discussion forums the subject of death threats from certain individuals in Mirebalais. He was very critical of the government and regularly denounced the mismanagement of the political crisis by the local authorities.

“Haitian authorities urgently need to identify the perpetrators of this sordid execution,” said Emmanuel Colombié, RSF Latin America bureau director. ” The working conditions of Haitian journalists who cover the social crisis in the country are extremely dangerous and worrying. The government must ensure their security throughout the country, and ensure the freedom of information, vital for all Haitians in this troubled period “

This second murder of journalist, after that of Pétion Rospide ( Endless Radio), on June 10, 2019, comes in a context of serious tensions in Haiti: for several months, the protests, often violent, are multiplying across the country against the President Jovenel Moses, entangled in corruption cases. Haitian journalists are particularly vulnerable and regularly targeted during these events.

In June 2019, the studios of radios  Télé Zénith and Radio Télé Ginen were attacked by armed groups . On 16 September, Elmon Zidor , a journalist for Hozana FM radio , was stabbed in Jacmel (south of the country). On September 23, Senator Jean-Marie Ralph Fethière, elected from the ruling Haitian Tèt Kale, opened fire in front of Parliament to disperse the crowd and injured an Associated Press (AP) photographer. On 30 September, Edmond Agénor Joseph , a cameraman for Radio Sans Fin , was seriously wounded by a bullet while covering a demonstration.

Finally, RSF recalls that the Haitian photographer reporter Vladjimir Legagneur has been missing since 14 March 2018 , and no significant progress has been reported by the investigators. Haiti occupies the 62nd place in the frenzy of the freedom of the press established by RSF in 2019.
