Nationalism VS Patriotism

Nationalism is founded on the idea that one’s country is superior to others, but patriotism is based on a person’s love and devotion to their country. This is the main difference between nationalism and patriotism. Whereas both nationalism and patriotism are expressions of love for one’s country, patriotism is viewed as a constructive way to express oneself, whereas nationalism is perceived as a dominating and exclusive behavior.

According to yourdictiinary.com Ethnocentrism, or the idea that your country’s way is always ideal in all situations, is the root of nationalism. Extreme nationalism devolves into a kind of parochialism when people think that the way things are done in their country is the only way that is acceptable. Xenophobia, an irrational hatred of individuals or cultures that are (or are thought to be) alien or different, can also result from nationalism.

While a true nationalist would hold that other people’s cultural practices or beliefs are intrinsically inferior to their own, patriotic people can recognize and embrace cultural differences. It is possible to be patriotic without thinking that one’s country of birth makes one superior to others.

Nationalists feel that because they are from their home country, they are better than those from other nations. The virtues of cooperating and collaboration with other countries can be realised by those who are patriotic. By cutting connections with other countries or international organizations, nationalism breeds isolationism.
