
On April 9, Óscar David Lozano Águila, the general director of the state-owned railroad, said that Mexico’s Maya Train has carried one million passengers since its inception in December 2023,media reports.
According to Lozano, a 70-year-old man bought his ticket on April 7, making him the millionth passenger.
Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo inaugurated the final section of the Maya Train line (Tren Maya in Spanish) on December 15, 2024, completing the 1,554-kilometer route that links the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo in the southeast. Among other cities, the train features stations in or close to Palenque, Campeche, Mérida, Valladolid, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Chetumal. This makes it easier for foreigners to visit tourist destinations including beaches, cenotes and archeological sites.
The train has also become a popular mode of transportation among the locals; in 2024, it carried over 281,000 passengers, including 167,901 locals and 120,141 seniors, students, teachers, and those with disabilities.
