‘Great Participation and Respect for All in Bolivia’s Poll’

La Paz:”Congratulations to the Bolivian people for the electoral day lived in peace and respect for all, with great participation, freely expressing their sovereign will for the future of Bolivia”: with these words, the General Secretariat of the Episcopal Conference of Bolivia addressed the Bolivian people, commenting on October 18 election day.

The press release, sent to Agenzia Fides, continues: “It was a great day, an expression of the democratic vocation of our people, an election day called to normalize democracy and elections, as a free expression of the popular will. We ask to continue in this peaceful climate, awaiting the final results that the Supreme Electoral Court will let us know”.

On October 18, more than 7 million Bolivians went to the polls to elect a new President and members of both chambers of Parliament. It was a historic vote, as it will allow Bolivia to emerge from a year of turmoil, restoring stability to its institutions. Yesterday’s consultation replaced that of October 20, 2019, when President Evo Morales’ victory in the first round was called into question following the existence of alleged fraud by the Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OSA) and then canceled in November 2019. In this circumstance, the center-right would like to return to power after 14 years of opposition.

Agency information that collected the Bolivian polls published last night, report that Luis Arce (MAS) could count on 52% of the votes against Carlos Mesa (Comunidad Ciudadana) with 31% and finally Luis Fernando Camacho (Creemos) with 14%. The election date had been postponed several times due to the coronavirus emergency, which in Bolivia has a toll of 140,000 infections and 8,000 deaths.
