The President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Munir Akram, today (16 Dec) said that as the COVID-19 pandemic toll rises, “the poorest countries and the poorest people in those countries have been hit hardest.”
Akram said, “we continue to deal also with severe disruptions in societies, in economies around the world, with deep impacts on health, education, economic growth, financial displacement and stress, and breakdowns of social systems.”
The UN official stressed that “we must ensure that this vaccine becomes available to everyone, everywhere, rich or poor, man or woman.”
He said this was “an acid test of international solidarity that the priority which is being accorded nationally to health workers and older people in, say the United States or in Europe, that that priority is extended to similar vulnerable groups in developing countries, and that they should take precedence over others in the availability of the vaccine.”
The Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, (ACT) Accelerator, is a UN-launched group of countries and organizations overseeing the development, production and equitable distribution of affordable COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.
COVAX is one of three pillars of the (ACT) Accelerator, with a focus on vaccines.
