Kolkata, the capital of the state of West Bengal, was founded as a commerce hub by an agent of the East India Company Job Charnok. Local landlords sold him Sutanati, Gobindapur, and Kalikata, three villages on the east bank of the Ganges. Dalhousie Square, originally the headquarters of the British Government’s administration, is still Bengal’s power hub, with Laldighi (a historic pond) in its midst.
