Shettihalli Rosary Church the Abandoned Floating Church of India
Shettihalli Rosary Church, commonly known as floating church, was built in 1860. It is a fascinating structure that is a significant piece of gothic architecture. It was used for prayers until 1960, when the church was demolished to make room for the Hemavathi Reservoir, and it is now one of the top Sakleshpur tourist attractions.
Currently, the church is in a poor state. When the Gorur dam was erected across Hemavathi reservoir, the project was abandoned. The dam was built from 1960 to 1979. The residents were compelled to migrate because the Hemavathi river’s backwaters were flooding.
Shettihalli is located in the Hassan District, 200 kilometres from Bangalore the state capital of Karnataka and 744 kilometres from Hyderabad the state capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Despite the fact that all of the residents were relocated to neighbouring communities, the church was left abandoned for good. This roofless majistic structure is in the middle of a deserted field, and it’s an uncharted territory.
During the monsoons, when the reservoir is nearly full, the Shettihalli church is nearly drowned except for its topmost spire.
Between July and October, when half of the church is underwater, is the best time to visit this amazing structure.
