According to government data, there has been a significant increase in cybercrime cases in India, with scammers defrauding people out of Rs 33,165 crore over the past four years, including Rs 22,812 crore in 2024. Several Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities have been recognized as hotspots for cybercrime.
In order to improve the system for dealing with cybercrimes, including efforts to improve cybersecurity infrastructure and law enforcement capacities in a thorough and coordinated way, the Indian Government has taken these steps, among others: The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to address all forms of cybercrimes in the nation in a thorough and coordinated manner.
The I4C launched the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal https://cybercrime.gov.in allowing the public to report occurrences related to all kinds of cybercrimes, with a concentration on cybercrimes against women and children.
The State/Union Territories Law Enforcement Agencies in question handle cybercrime cases reported on this platform, their conversion into FIRs, and any follow-up actions in accordance with the law.Launched under I4C in 2021, the “Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System” aims to prevent financial criminals from siphoning off funds and to enable prompt reporting of financial frauds.
A new tool called Report and Check Suspect has been added by the Indian Government on cybercrime.gov.in. With the use of this tool, citizens can use Suspect Search to look for cybercriminals’ identities in the I4C’s database. In order to proactively collect, evaluate, and share customized alerts with organizations across sectors for proactive threat mitigation activities by them, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) runs an automated cyber threat exchange platform. The National Cyber Coordination Center (NCCC) was established by CERT-In to provide the situational awareness of current and future cyber security threats.
In order to detect malicious programs and offer free tools for their removal, CERT-In runs the Cyber Swachhta Kendra (Botnet Cleaning and Malware Analysis Centre). It also offers cyber security advice and best practices to individuals and organizations.
To raise awareness about cybercrime, the Central Government has used several measures, such as sending out messages via SMS, the I4C social media accounts, such as X @CyberDost, Facebook CyberDostI4C, Instagram cyberDostI4C and Telegram cyberdosti4c.
