Hemis Monastery A Major Tourist Attraction of Ladakh

Hemis Monastery is a Drukpa Lineage Tibetan monastery. Hemis Monastery, set on a mountain along the west bank of the Indus River, is one of Ladakh’s most famous monasteries. The countless paintings or Thangkas that are meticulously kept here and shown on the famed Hemis Festival are eagerly awaited by tourists.

On the western bank of the Indus River, Hemis lies about 45 kilometres south of Leh. Hemis Monastery is Ladakh’s largest monastery. In 1630, it was completed.

Hemis Monastery houses a spectacular copper statue of Lord Buddha along with stupas made of gold and silver, thangkas (a painting on cotton or silk, depicting Buddhist deity) and murals. The Hemis Festival is held in Ladakh every year on the tenth day of the Tibetan lunar month Tse-Chu. Guru Padmasambhava’s birth is commemorated with a two-day festival.Hemis Monastery is attractively decorated for the festival on this particular day. Beautiful handicrafts are on display at this vibrant event.

The highlights of the Hemis Festival in Ladakh are the masked dances, popularly known as the “Chham Dance,” which symbolise the triumph of good over evil.
