Google announced a significant enhancement on Gmail’s 21st birthday that enables business users to send end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) emails with only a few clicks to any user in any email mailbox. With plans to send E2EE emails to any Gmail inbox in the upcoming weeks and to any email inbox later this year, the feature started in beta from April 1,2025, and enables users to send E2EE emails to Gmail users inside an organization.
Gmail users just need to enable “Additional encription” when composing an encrypted email in order to send it. When a Gmail user with a personal or business account receives the email, it will automatically decrypt it.
A link to sign in and see the email in a limited version of Gmail will be sent to recipients who are using Google’s Gmail mobile app or non gmail users. The encrypted communication can then be viewed and responded to by the receiver using a guest Google Workspace account.
Driven by CSE, data is encrypted on the client before being sent or saved in Google’s cloud storage, rendering it unreadable to Google and other third parties.
