Karni Mata Temple- Temple of Rats

Karni Mata’s ( Mother Goddess Karni) main temple is in Deshnoke, a tiny Indian (the state of Rajasthan) town around 30 kilometres from Bikaner.It’s also known as “Temple of Rats”

The Karni Mata main temple also has thousands of rats along with white rats which are religiously known as “Kabbas“. These rats are considered very holy and It is considered lucky to spot a white rat.

Many people feed the rats candy, milk, and other delicacies. Rat food is likewise regarded holy and is served as prasada(sacred food).

Indian ruler Maharaja Ganga Singh erected the Rat Temple more than 600 years ago in honour of the Hindu goddess Durga, who has reincarnated as Karni Mata.Karni Mata has a trident or trishul in her hand and stands 75 cm tall in the temple. A flower garland and a crown adorn her.

The entire temple is built of marble, and the domes are silver and gold. Gold is also used for the Mandap (covered structure with pillars) and the pandal (temporary structure) above the deity. The temple’s main entryway boasts magnificent and beautiful sculpture.

Thousands of pilgrims visit Karni Mata Temple every year, and the Navratri festival is celebrated with much pomp and ceremony, with numbers growing throughout that time.
