Originating in the rough environment of Portugal’s Serra da Estrela mountains, the Estrela Mountain Dog is a large livestock guardian breed. Another name for them is the Cão da Serra da Estrela. Among Portugal’s oldest dog breeds, these strong canines have long been devoted friends and fierce guardians of livestock in their native country. The tough environment of the highlands is easily adapted to by Estrela Mountain Dogs thanks to their robust physique and thick, weather-resistant coat.
The Estrela Mountain Dog has two coat types: a short, slightly coarse coat and a long coat with a dense undercoat and a thick, coarse outer coat. The breed is available in a variety of colors, such as fawn, brindle, or wolf grey, and it is preferred to have a black mask or muzzle.Life span: 10–14 years,Weight: 35-58 for women, 37-60 for men Height: Female: 24.5-28, Male: 25-29.
Their active, placid, and expressive face, along with their broad, round head and relatively short muzzle, give them a distinctive mastiff-like appearance. Usually, the length of their skull and muzzle are equal, though occasionally the skull is a little longer.
The breed, which is a natural pack dog, thrives on having regular contact with people and other animals. Despite their tendency to be initially cautious about strangers, they are known to be fiercely protective of children, alert to threats, and have a laid-back and loving disposition in familiar environments.
