Escalation of Fighting in Northeast Syria, Families Continue to Flee

With the escalation in hostilities in northeast Syria, families continue to flee their homes in Ras al-ain and Tal Abiad. Tal Tamar, 32 km south of Syria’s northern border, is one of three location, including Ar-Raqqa city and Hasakeh city, where families are seeking refuge.

While many of the internally displaced have reached relatives within host communities, those left to stay at collective shelters, like schools, are staying under basic conditions lacking access to urgently needed services including health nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.

While significant further displacements continue, UNICEF’s partners have started providing emergency assistance to families arriving at collective shelters in Hassakeh city and Tal Tamar.

In Hasakeh, UNICEF and sector partners started water trucking to collective shelters to mitigate the impact on water supply from the disruption caused by the targeting of Alouk water pumping station. UNICEF protection partners have also identified 13 separated children in some of the collective shelters who are currently under spontaneous foster arrangements. Nutrition screenings are also being conducted in shelters with 400 families have received high energy biscuits. 315 women and children in collective shelters in Hasakeh have also been provided with primary healthcare consultations.

UNICEF, through its staff, facilitators and partners and with its stocked up WASH, Health and Nutrition supplies is covering the needs for 45,000 children and women for one month in addition to seasonal clothes for children under the age of five, with additional supplies in the pipeline.

The protection of children in the northeast of Syria and across the country must be prioritized at all times, said UNICEF adding that the only solution to the brutal conflict in Syria is a political solution~UNICEF
