An Argentine mountaineer died 40 years ago on an icy volcanic peak in the Andes. His two daughters have recovered his rucksack from the scene and discovered camera film inside, which gave them a glimpse of some of his last moments. Guillermo Vieiro died in 1985 at the age of 44 while descending the Tupungato lava dome in Argentina, which is one of the highest peaks in the Americas.
Then a mountaineer named Gabriela Cavallaro saw his rucksack on a slope last year, looked it over, and contacted Vieiro’s daughters Guadalupe, 40, and Azul, 44.
According to the media reports, for safety, Gabriela left the bag behind and only brought a camera and a pickaxe with her and her coworker, fellow mountain guide Oswaldo Freire.During an 11-day expedition in February of this year, Cavallaro, Guadalupe, Azul, and two filmmakers set out to retrieve the bag from a height of roughly 6,100 meters (20,000 feet), which is near the summit of the 6,600-meter volcanic peak.
They found two rolls of film that had belonged to their father, a sleeping bag, a jacket, a water bottle, aspirin, vitamin C tablets, and a set of knives inside the backpack.
