Bachelet in Human Rights Council

Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that navigating a clear path “out of the complex COVID-19 crisis, and towards an inclusive, green, sustainable, and resilient future, will be the work of this generation of world leaders – or their downfall.”

The High Commissioner for Human Rights, speaking at the 47th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva today (21 June), described the current period as one of “grave setbacks in human rights.” Extreme poverty, inequalities, and injustice, she claimed, are on the rise, while democratic and civic space is eroding.

These are “bold steps that place unprecedented emphasis on the power of human rights to foster sound and inclusive growth, long-term peace, and trust-based societies,” according to the High Commissioner.
