Arikamedu is located 3 kilometres south of Pondicherry, India, on the Virampattinam River. The artefacts discovered at this location demonstrated that ancient India and Rome had regular communication. The majority of the relics date from around the year 200. Those unearthed included a warehouse and a structure. In 1945, Sir Mortimer Wheeler excavated the site. Arikameda became a centre for maritime trade. It grew into a significant port, exporting textiles, glass, jewels, and shell bangles. From Arikameda, wines, olive oils, and other products were imported.
